Wheel repair and wheel refinishing

Cost, feasibility, duration and process of a wheel repair. Questions to the wheel doctor.

My wheels are damaged. What does the repair cost?

To be able to quote the cost of a wheel repair in advance, we first need detailed photos of the damage. Please attach them to your request.

You will find a rough overview of the costs in the price overview for wheel refurbishment. Please note that we can only submit binding quotes for wheel work after inspecting the wheels here on site.

My wheels are damaged. Is a repair still possible?

To assess the feasibility of a repair and quote the corresponding costs in advance, we first need detailed photos of the damage. Please attach them to your request.

Please note that we cannot always judge feasibility from photos. An inspection or test here on site is often necessary.

I have run-out damage. What is the next step?

Whether your wheels can still be repaired in the event of deformation or run-out damage can only be determined by an inspection (3D laser measurement) here on site. For this the tyres must be removed from the wheels. During the inspection process, both the complete wheels (wheel with tyre fitted) and the bare wheels are measured.

The inspection costs €40 incl. VAT per wheel. If the wheel is delivered with a tyre, we additionally charge for removing and refitting the tyre incl. laser balancing. You will find the prices for the tyre service under tyre service.

The repair costs €150 incl. VAT per wheel plus tyre fitting if delivered with tyres. A repaint is generally not necessary for a run-out repair.

Please note that wheel inspections with tyres fitted require a prior appointment. Wheel inspection is only possible without the vehicle.

Do you also process truck wheels?

We do not offer processing of steel truck wheels, as our machines are designed for car wheels. Aluminium truck wheels, for example polished or high-gloss compacted wheels from Alcoa or Speedline, can be re-cut on our CNC lathes to within 1/100 mm and then resealed. Please enquire with us beforehand.

My wheel has a crack. Can you repair that?

For safety reasons we categorically refuse to process wheels with cracks.

Since a cracked wheel already has considerable structural damage, the danger posed by the repaired wheel during later use is too great. In addition, welding subjects the aluminium alloy to extremely high temperatures. This can change the material structure and thus weaken the material.

Can I wait while my wheels are repaired?

Only in a few cases is it possible for our customers to wait on site for a wheel repair to be completed. Most repairs involve processes that rule out "while you wait" treatment (e.g. stripping wheels or drying times during painting). You should therefore assume that you will need to leave your wheels with us and that they cannot be completed on the same day. Precise information on turnaround times is available by phone on +49 (0) 6074 21 50 70.

Can I bring my vehicle to you for a wheel repair?

Because of the large number of wheels that pass through our facility every day (capacity of 200 wheels/day), we are unable to accept customer vehicles. Please therefore deliver your wheels or complete wheels to us without the vehicle.

Alternatively, we can collect them from you as part of our pick-up and delivery service.

How long does a wheel repair take with you?

The repair time depends on several factors. However, the repair process required for your wheels and the time of delivery have the greatest influence. With complex processing variants, the individual processing steps dictate the duration of the throughput.

Experience shows that in peak months (April to June and October to December) we work at our capacity limit and then have a processing time of at least one week.

After handing in your wheels, you can view the processing status online at any time.

Do you also process motorcycle wheels?

For motorcycle wheels we offer painting, powder coating and CNC diamond cutting. Please note, however, that for some wheel types certain processes cannot be applied because of their design.

My motorcycle wheel is buckled. Do you repair that?

Run-out repair of motorcycle wheels is only possible with minimal deformation. In principle we must first measure every wheel to determine whether a repair is still possible at all. For this the tyre must be removed from the wheel. A prerequisite for measurement is a centre bore diameter of at least 43 mm so that the wheel can be clamped on the shaft of the laser measurement system.

The inspection costs €25 incl. VAT per wheel. If the wheel is delivered with a tyre, we additionally charge €25 for removing and refitting the tyre incl. laser balancing.

If the repair is carried out by us, we credit 100% of the inspection costs against the repair price. The repair costs €125 incl. VAT per wheel plus tyre fitting if delivered with a tyre.

A repaint is generally not necessary for a run-out repair, but cannot be ruled out. Please note that wheel inspections with tyres fitted require a prior appointment. We do not offer fitting on the motorcycle.

How do I find out when my wheels are ready?

After completion and successful quality control, we contact you in the way you prefer (by phone or e-mail). You also have the option of viewing the current processing status of your order online around the clock. Simply enter your order or customer number on the order status page.

What does 100% traceability mean?

Every wheel delivered to us receives a small marking (Data Matrix code and serial number) on the inner bead seat. During processing, all important processing parameters are documented in our system with reference to the marking. This includes documentation of material removal and the CNC machining program used during CNC machining. In addition, the 3D measurement reports used, all materials used and colour codes are stored. This means that it is possible to trace at any time what was done to the wheel and when.

Machines and equipment for wheel refurbishment

Demonstration, prices, financing, delivery times, training, spare parts and support.

We are interested in buying a machine. Is a demonstration possible?

A comprehensive demonstration of our machines in daily operation is something we expressly encourage. Only during a demonstration can we show that all machines and systems are developed and optimised from daily needs and are also in use in our own wheel production and wheel repair departments. Experience has also shown that the period following a demonstration is ideal for determining the customer's requirements.

We are seeing ever greater demand for wheel refurbishment from our customers. What does one of your wheel refurbishment systems cost?

A special feature of our machines and systems for wheel refurbishment is that they are adapted in size and equipment to the individual needs of our customers. Flat-rate prices are therefore only possible for a few individual machines without a prior needs assessment. We recommend that interested customers come to us for a demonstration, followed by a joint needs assessment.

Do you also offer financing or leasing for the machines?

The majority of the machines and systems purchased from us are financed through what is known as hire purchase. If required, we will gladly refer you to financial service providers who already look after existing customers, so that they can send you a no-obligation offer.

If we buy a machine from you, do you also help us get the processes up and running afterwards?

In the machine business, looking after customers not only during the installation phase but throughout the entire period that follows is part of our basic philosophy. After purchase of the machine or system, we ensure an extensive, application-related transfer of knowledge through comprehensive training, optimise processes together with our customers and remain available with advice and assistance thereafter.

We want to offer wheel repairs. Which machines and systems do we need?

The choice of suitable machines and systems depends on the one hand on which processes are to be offered, and on the other on the quantities expected.

Example: when choosing the processes, the question arises whether the customer wants to limit themselves to processing damaged diamond-cut wheels (damage in the diamond-cut area) or also carry out colour changes on wheels. If the customer concentrates on diamond-cut wheels, we recommend purchasing a cleaning solution for wheels, a CNC lathe and a solution for the subsequent coating. Ideally, diamond-cut wheels should be coated with powder (acrylic powder), but it is also possible to do this with wet paint.

The purchase of suitable systems becomes more extensive if the customer also wants to offer recoating. This can also be done with wet paint (old paint as the carrier), but it only becomes efficient and durable when the surface is completely rebuilt. For this the wheel must first be chemically stripped, blasted and then powder coated. A stripping solution, a blasting solution and a powder coating solution are therefore required.

We are happy to advise you on all considerations and to cost the different variants, tailored to your needs.

How much space do we need to install your systems?

We will send you the recommended installation areas for the individual systems on request. Since several systems are usually used together in the wheel refurbishment process, we try to optimise the workflows in advance, adapted to the respective mix of machines. We are happy to plan the complete refurbishment operation at your premises together with you. Access to building plans makes it easier to select the appropriate system size and to plan optimally.

How quickly can you deliver your machines?

The delivery time depends on the machine or system required. CNC lathes, ultrasonic cleaning systems, stripping tanks and stripping agents, and straightening machines are usually always in stock. Powder coating lines, blasting containers, stripping containers and preparation containers are made to order and therefore have a delivery time of at least 4 weeks.

How many participants take part in one of your training courses?

All training at Mainhattan-Wheels is carried out only with the respective customer. There are no training sessions in which employees from different companies are trained together. Experience shows that training is particularly successful when a maximum of two employees from one company are trained.

Can we also get spare parts from you if something breaks?

We keep an extensive stock of spare parts and can usually deliver all required parts within one working day.

What about maintenance of the machines? Do you do that, and if so, how often?

In addition to selling our systems, and alongside training and support, we also offer the option of having all maintenance carried out by us. Depending on the machine or system type, our maintenance team will contact you before the end of the maintenance interval to discuss the details of maintenance at your premises.

How does your support work? Do you also send a technician if there is a problem with a machine?

In addition to our application support, we also operate technical support. Our technicians will come to your premises should a problem arise that impairs the use of the respective machine or system.

Development and sale of alloy wheels

Customer wheels, accessories, brake clearance, shipping, warranty and TÜV.

I have read that you not only produce your own wheels but also manufacture wheels to customer order. Can you also build four individual wheels for my car?

In principle that would be possible. However, such a project leads to extremely high costs per wheel. As a rule we develop customer wheels from a minimum quantity of 100. Since producing your own wheels incurs not only the manufacturing costs but also, for example, development, drawing, testing and tooling costs, this only really makes sense from a certain production volume for cost reasons. Compared with other suppliers, however, we can offer attractive prices even for small series, because we can mill wheels individually in-house from a blank.

Can you also supply existing designs with an individual bolt pattern and offset?

Since we manufacture the wheels largely in-house, we can also take your specifications and wishes into account individually. This applies not only to bolt pattern and offset. In our multi-axis machining centre we are also able to mill individual designs from blanks up to and including 24 inch.

Which accessories are included?

The mounting hardware required for fitting (centring rings, wheel bolts or wheel nuts) is included in the scope of delivery and in the price, unless the wheel's approval document requires the use of the original equipment accessories. In this case you will be explicitly advised on the order confirmation or invoice to continue using the original fasteners. You have the option of ordering additional items such as coloured adhesive weights, hidden valves and locking wheel bolts.

Can the colour of the centre caps be chosen freely?

The desired colour of the centre caps (from our range) can be chosen freely when ordering. You will find an overview in our online shop.

Which centring rings are fitted in the wheels?

Aluminium centring rings are fitted in the wheels, unless the wheels are drilled to a fixed pattern and no centring rings are required. Whether and, if so, which rings are used is shown in the list on the order confirmation or invoice.

Can the original wheel bolts or wheel nuts continue to be used?

The original wheel bolts or wheel nuts can continue to be used with some wheel versions. This information can be found in the application list in the "Mounting kit" column (Original or OE).

Will the wheels fit my brakes?

If all the brake components on your vehicle are original equipment, please refer to the freely accessible ABE (German general type approval) or component approval (Teilegutachten) documents on our website.

If a non-standard brake system is fitted to the vehicle, we can draw the contour of the brake, place it within the contour of the wheel and check brake clearance. For this we send you a data sheet in advance for determining the brake contour, which you complete and return to us.

How do you ship the wheels to me?

Complete sets (from 4 wheels) are usually shipped on a half pallet by freight forwarder. The forwarder will contact you before delivery to arrange an appointment.

Individual wheels (up to and including 3 pieces) are shipped by UPS parcel service.

Will I be notified before delivery?

The forwarder will contact you before delivery to arrange an appointment.

How are complete wheel sets shipped?

Complete wheel sets are shipped on a half pallet by freight forwarder. The forwarder will contact you before delivery to arrange an appointment.

Do I have a warranty on the wheels?

We are convinced of the quality of our products. Unlike most wheel manufacturers, we grant a 24-month surface warranty on all products.

Do I have to have my wheels registered with the TÜV?

Every order is checked by our team for fit with the specified vehicle and for the corresponding TÜV approval. Depending on the type of approval document available, the following measures are required:

  • ABE without condition A01: in Germany no entry in the vehicle documents is required, and you do not have to go to the TÜV.
  • ABE with condition A01: according to the ABE approval document available to us, presentation at the TÜV is required. The inspector merely issues you with a fitting confirmation according to § 19 StVZO. No entry in the vehicle documents is necessary.
  • Component approval (Teilegutachten): in Germany, presentation at the TÜV and an entry in the vehicle documents are required.

You will be informed of the relevant approval type by e-mail during the ordering process, once the order has been checked.

Which valves are used on complete wheels?

Metal valves are generally fitted. Whether the valves are used in black or silver depends on the wheel finish. You are welcome to tell us your preferences when ordering.

What is included in a complete wheel?

Our complete wheels include the wheel incl. centre cap, any necessary mounting hardware, tyre, valve, fitting of the tyre to the wheel and laser-guided balancing incl. balance weights. When using balance weights we naturally take the wheel colour into account. For example, black balance weights are used on black wheels.

Every complete wheel is assembled individually for you after ordering, and our complete wheel assembly is carried out as standard without a tyre pressure sensor. Please note that since 1 November 2014 all vehicles newly registered in the EU (cars, off-road vehicles) must have a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). If your vehicle has an active TPMS with tyre pressure sensors, you can order TPMS sensors from us as optional extras for certain vehicle models. TPMS sensors you order are fitted and programmed by us in the complete wheel and must be activated on the vehicle by you after receipt.
