Powder or paint

Powder coating or paint?

Both have their place. Most of the time the answer is: powder, and when the colour demands it, both.

  • Powder coating

The process of first choice: more attractively priced, free of solvents and emissions, higher film thickness, more resistant to impact, scratches and abrasion, more chemical-resistant and fully load-bearing as soon as it has cooled. The powder is applied electrostatically and cured at 160 to 200 °C. Neon colours, silver, anthracite, bronze, gold, chrome, RAL colours: the complete range.

  • Wet paint

The advantage: practically any colour, any combination. And later damage can usually be spot-repaired. Here, wet paint is always embedded between a powder primer and an acrylic powder clear coat. That gives the paintwork the durability of a powder coating.

  • Multi-layer systems and tinted clears

Candy colours and candy tinted clears are applied in a multi-layer powder process, for example on a chrome powder base. Two- to four-layer systems, effect shades and the combination of wet paint, powder, diamond cutting and tinted clear are all possible.

  • Original colours

BMW Ferric Grey, Orbit Grey, Audi Titanium Matt, Porsche Platinum, BBS Gold: we have access to almost all original colours used by the wheel makers. In our wheel showroom you can see many colour samples in the original.

The build-up, every time

The steps are identical for powder and wet paint. Only step 5 differs.

    Gentle cold stripping without heat.

  3. 03

Masking of the hub face and bolt holes

Mounting face and centre bore remain dimensionally accurate.

  4. 04

    Epoxy powder primer

Corrosion protection and adhesion base for all subsequent layers.

  5. 05

    Powder coating or wet paint

Powder, in several layers depending on the colour, or wet paint in the colour of your choice.

  6. 06

    Clear acrylic powder coating

Transparent seal with acrylic powder, matt or gloss.

Questions about powder and paint

Which is better: powder coating or painting?

A powder coating is more durable, more economical and kinder to the environment. Wet paint offers the larger colour choice. If a shade is only available as wet paint, we combine: powder primer, wet paint, acrylic powder seal.

Can I have any colour?

Yes: standard colours, RAL, metallic, special effects, candy and tinted clears. What we show you in the wheel showroom is only a fraction of the possibilities.

What does a colour change cost?

As part of a repair, nothing extra. With two- to four-layer systems or premium powders the price rises with the number of layers. The number of damaged areas plays a minor role.

How long does the coating take?

A few working days, depending on the build-up. On average 1 to 2 days.

How long does a powder coating last?

We give a 2-year warranty on the durability of our surface coatings. The decisive factor is the complete build-up on a stripped, blasted substrate: we never apply powder over old layers.
